Why A Woman Ends Up On The Streets and/or Jail

Consider a woman starting life over. She has suffered abuse since childhood. The trauma of her past has determined the course of her adulthood, pulling her into a destructive cycle. The only places she has to stay are with people who will use her, abuse her, sell her or manipulate her. She is without safe housing. She is separated from any healthy family and friends. She is undereducated, un-equipped, and unprepared. Her chances of survival are low, and getting lower each day that passes on the streets, in the cars or in the crack houses.

Consider a woman whose experience of emotional and physical abuse have shaped her and now control her life, compelling her to live on the street. Substance abuse is a way to mask the pain. To support her habit, she becomes a prostitute. Her options are few.

Consider a woman who has been incarcerated many times. When she is in jail, she shares a dorm with others just like her. She gets three meals a day, sleeps in a bunk, showers without privacy, and gains the weight she lost on the street. When she is released, the clothes she wore into jail are returned and she receives a bus pass. But there is no bus stop. The one person who will be there to get her is the person who wants her to use again. Waiting in the parking lot – at the jail or the shelter or the treatment center – is the dealer, or the pimp, or the abusive man in her life.

Consider a women who, because of her addiction, abuse and prostitution has issues regarding mental, emotional and physical health. She likely has no high school diploma or G.E.D. Consider a woman whose children have been raised by others – family members, foster care, Human Services, or others unknown to her. Her family has given up.
